Some things I'll never figure out. Today I got to work around 7:15 am, conducted three interviews (fun stuff) and went back to my office around 11:15 am. I definitely needed some humor to get my day and week off on the right track. I checked my voice mail and out of three messages two were from Becky. Thinking there may be something urgent that Becky needed to talk with me about I called her first. Luckily what Becky wanted wasn't urgent. She just wanted to let me know that she had a discussion with Jessica's pre-school teacher about Jessica's behavior in school. It turns out that Jessica had taken her spare pair of underwear out of her backpack, put them on her head and ran around the classroom. My first reaction was to laugh about this, but then Becky pointed out how embarrassed she was while talking to Jessie's teacher. I stopped laughing about it -- until I hung up. I actually thought that Becky was calling to laugh with me for a few minutes and bring some levity to my day, guess not. My next thought was that Becky wanted to talk about Jessie's behavior and discuss options for how we might handle this awful situation. When I asked Becky what she thought we should do about this behavior I realized that I was wrong again. Rather than offering a suggestion for how we should handle Jessie's behavior Becky asked a question. "Any idea where she got the idea to wear underwear on her head and run around like an idiot in pre-school"? Stunned, I said nothing. In retrospect I should have deflected Becky's accusatory comment by suggesting that we not allow my Dad to baby-sit our kids anymore. Being Monday morning I just didn't think quick enough. What I'll never figure out is how Jessie wearing underwear on her head is my fault. Oh well, I'm just thankful that Jessie hasn't asked Mrs. Richter to pull her finger -- yet.
